Arrests made in December mutilation murder case

Date Posted: 2009-01-23

Three men and a woman have been arrested in connection with the murder of a man found dismembered, mutilated and buried in an Ogimi Village farm.

Okinawa Prefecture Police investigating the murder of Mitsuo Nitta used fingerprints found at the crime scene to track the suspects. The 50-year-old Nitta’s body was found mutilated and wrapped in plastic, then buried in a farmer’s field in the Tako area of the normally quiet Ogimi Village. His head, arms and legs had been severed from the body.

Police, who are still investigating the brutal murder, say the suspects had been using Nitta’s bank ATM card to withdraw money from his account since the murder was discovered. They say the three men withdrew money numerous times, with one withdrawal of ¥200,000. Investigators say the men are believed to have connections to gangster groups, and that a secondary investigation is also under way. Some of the ATM transactions occurred in mainland Japan.

The woman was arrested separately from the men, but police say she is being considered a suspect because of suspicious behavior.
