Smoking bomb uncovered at Omoromachi construction siteDate Posted: 2009-01-23 As with a bomb uncovered by a power shovel operator in Itoman a week ago, the unstable ordnance began leaking, but caused little damage except smoke. Naha officials of the Japan Ground Self Defense Force Explosive Ordnance Unit were quickly on the scene and ordered the evacuation shortly after the 12:30 p.m. incident. Investigators say the bomb might be a yellow phosphorus type munition, but JGSDF officials haven’t confirmed it. Naha City Police closed off the Omoromachi area and warned residents to close their windows to prevent the smoke from getting into homes. JGSDF officials say the bomb did not explode after contact with the heavy equipment. There were no injuries. The incident happened at a construction site where workers were digging up soil when the power shovel found more than dirt. |
