Doctor denies fraudulent use of medical cards

Date Posted: 2009-01-15

Authorities are considering charges against three people, one a medical doctor, on grounds they were illegally using other peoplesí medical health cards and racking up phony charges against them.
One witness has told hospital officials a doctor practicing at the hospital borrowed health cards from other people, including his workersí family and friends, then used the cards to record people receiving treatments. The witness says the doctor paid •2,000 for use of the card, but failed to tell the people what he was doing. Officials say he was using to cards to submit medical bills to the government for reimbursement.
Over a four-month period, one example cited reveals, an individual allegedly received 73 treatments at the hospital, while his wife received 76 treatments. Documents reflect the couple visiting a total of 220 times for examinations and treatment. The doctor is denying the allegations, saying ďI didnít charge anything illegally. It was just a typing mistake on the computer.Ē He has told investigators he didnít use anybodyís health card.
One couple whose card was used says there were treatment records showing they went to the hospital 21 times for treatment in a single month. The couple says itís impossible, because they have their own business and simply couldnít go to a hospital 21 days in a month. The couple also told investigators they didnít even know where the hospital they supposedly were treated by is at.
