North winds bring wintry weather to OkinawaDate Posted: 2009-01-15 It was more than just the cold, though. Hail fell in northern Okinawa and gusting winds forced cancellations of a Ryukyu Air Commuter flight to Aguni and Kumejima Islands. In Miyakojima City, winds spawned high waves that actually sent fish surging onto the beach, where local residents scrambled to pick them up and take them home. Temperatures of 7.6C were recorded at Kunigami Village, while Nago City clocked in at 9.4C, and Naha City was a brisk 11.2C. Winds hit 24.4m/sec at Yonaguni, while five-meter high waves were generated by the 22.5m/sec winds at Naha City. Golfers at Arashiyama Golf Club got more than they bargained for; hail hit at 10:30 a.m., again at 11:30 a.m., and a third time at 2 p.m. They said the winter weather made them feel cold, but not enough to stop them from playing golf. |
