Air cargo hub now under construction

Date Posted: 2009-01-08

Hirokazu Nakaima’s dream of a “trading type industrial business” is moving toward reality with construction of a new international air cargo hub complex at Naha International Airport.
Okinawa’s governor and former leader of the Naha Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Nakaima has promoted the air hub concept for years, calling it “the fastest way to promote Okinawa and make it a strong economic development project that meets strategies of development.” All Nippon Airways bought into the governor’s vision, and is now constructing the air hub that will link Okinawa and all Asian countries.
Naha International Airport will be home to the ANA international air cargo business, which will include physical distribution infrastructure, maintenance facilities, trading businesses for secondary markets, and distribution processing. ANA predicts the economic growth is continuing to be rapid between Asian countries despite some of the world economic difficulties, and predicts the new facility will bring positive economic change to Okinawa.
Air cargo delivery means timely delivery of fresh products, including ingredients needed by restaurants. Japanese and Okinawan ingredients used by an Okinawan restaurant in downtown Hong Kong is one customer seeking the service, while Okinawa stores and restaurants see a viable market for goods from other Asian countries. Fears of products from China has boosted Okinawa’s export orders, despite prices being higher.
Companies are already lining up to do business through the international air cargo hub, despite its not yet being in operation.
