Whale watching season starts

Date Posted: 2008-12-31

The season’s first whales have been spotted off Kerama Islands. Hotel owner Hitoshi Miyagi said that he spotted two whales, possible a couple, swimming in the ocean about noon on Dec. 24.

Humpback whales usually appear in the area around middle of December and local people have been on watch since ten days ago. People who have seen the whales say that it appears that one of the whales is the same that was spotted there last year.

The Zamami Village Whale Watching Association says this year’s whale watching tours will start from December 27. Association officials welcome everyone to see the whales. “Looks like the whales are expecting to see you too,” one official said.
