Man wanted for Okinawa murder arrested in Tokyo

Date Posted: 2008-12-31

A man sought by police for committing a murder at an Okinawa post office has been tracked down and arrested by police in Tokyo’s Kitaku area.

Toshiyasu Yamashiro, who Okinawa Prefecture Police say is responsible for robbing the Uema Post Office in Naha City last July and murdering a man, has been picked up by Tokyo Police. Yamashiro is also believed to be involved in another murder in the Miyagi area in November.
The robbery and murder at the Uema Post Office took place July 24th, shortly after 1:30 p.m. The robber-turned-murderer was wearing a mask, sung glasses and cap when he stole ¥3 million, then shot a man before fleeing. Both Naha and Urasoe police have been investigating the case, with Yamashiro’s identification made by DNA and a fingerprint left at the post office crime scene. Yamashiro had been living near the post office at the time.

The case grew when Yamashiro was linked to a murder in the Miyagi area’s Town Plaza Kanehide Miyagi Branch. Yamashiro’s DNA was found both at the post office and Kanehide crimes. Yamashiro somehow learned of police interest in him and fled to Tokyo shortly before police arrived at his home. He was traced to Tokyo, where Okinawa Prefecture Police asked Tokyo Police to capture him. They did, and Yamashiro confessed to the post office robbery. He is being extradited to Okinawa.
