Amphibious bus a new tourism twist

Date Posted: 2008-12-31

A new tourist bus is operating on Okinawa streets, and on the water, as well.

The new amphibious bus is trying to establish a new tourism niche here, and will operate on a trial basis through March 19th. The amphibious bus owned by Japan Amphibious Vehicle Tourism is one of only three in Japan. The other two operate on the mainland.

The Osaka-based company president says “Okinawa has such beautiful nature, and we want to keep and share it. He’s appealing to local business enterprises to work with his company to promote the new tourism project. Initially, the company will run 90-minute tours five times daily between the Okinawa Prefecture Museum and Ginowan Marina.

“It’s a wonderful bus for tourists,” says Vice Governor Katsuko Asato, “and it’s helpful to promote Okinawa tourism with this amphibious bus.” She says “It’s a new tool, and one we hope works well.” The amphibious bus carries 42 passengers. The roundtrip tours cost ¥3,600 for adults and ¥1,300 for children 2~12. Children under age 2, and babies, fare is ¥800.

Japan Amphibious Vehicle Tourism reservations are available at (098) 862-8410.
