Elderly woman distraught over abandoned pets

Date Posted: 2008-12-25

She doesn’t want to be publicly identified, but the elderly Okinawa woman does want people to think about how all life is treated.

The old woman is speaking publicly about how she believes citizens of today are calloused in how animals are treated, ignoring their needs and abandoning them when they become a nuisance. The ease with which people discard cats and dogs has her asking “Where have Okinawan peoples’ morals gone?”

She began talking around her neighborhood, and to the media, after witnessing a dead kitten on an Okinawa street, the apparent victim of a passing automobile. She says she cried, because the kitten was playing with siblings only a day earlier, and now is gone. The woman retrieved the kitten from the roadway and buried it, cried, and has launched a crusade to make people think about how they care for animals.

The abandoned animals issue goes beyond the elderly woman’s concern. Too many dogs and cats have been collected to the Prefecture Humane Society Kennel Center, leaving officials no choice but to euthanize and dispose of many. “They look so sad to be there inside cages,” the old lady laments. “I wonder how they feel while waiting for disposal? Why have their masters left these dogs and cats alone? Don’t they love their own dogs and cats? Where are their morals?”
