Date Posted: 2008-12-18

A Marine Corps officer stands accused of trying to break into a residential apartment in Chatanís Hamagawa District over the weekend.

Okinawa Police say the Camp Hansen-based Marine was arrested as he tried to break into an apartment shortly before 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Police say the Marine, who theyíve identified as Second Lieutenant Christopher Bloom, was under the influence of alcohol as he attempted the break-in. Military officials have not confirmed the Marineís identity, but have acknowledged they are working with Okinawa officials on the case.

A police spokesman says witnesses had first seen Bloom walking on the roof of an adjacent building, then jumping to the apartment building where they apprehended him. Witnesses called police, who said the man was still trying to get into the apartment when they arrived nearly ten minutes later.

The Naha District Prosecutorís Office says police have filed trespassing charges against Bloom.
