Young teen rips off convenience store

Date Posted: 2008-12-18

A 14-year-old boy is in police custody after being caught moments after robbing a Mihara area convenience store.

The boy brandished a knife as he entered the store and threatened the store clerk, demanding “give me money, open the register now.” The clerk fled through a rear door, alerting police to the robbery in progress. The boy escaped, but police found a knife sheath inside the convenience store, and witness interviews provided a description of the youth.

It didn’t take Naha City Police long to spot the boy and ask him “did you rob the shop?” Shaken when told by police his fingerprint was on the knife sheath, the boy told police he needed money because he was running away from home and didn’t have any cash. Confronted with security camera video that showed the boy stealing a carton of cigarettes after he couldn’t open the cash register, he confessed.
