Okinawa’s Mika Miyazato joins ladies pro golf ranks

Date Posted: 2008-12-11

Ai-chan has to move over; another Miyazato is becoming a professional and will compete on the U.S. Ladies professional Golf Association Tour.

Mika Miyazato, who’s no relation to established LPGA pro Ai Miyazato, made the decision Tuesday after earning her LPGA tour card. The 19-year-old Mika finished in the top 20 in last weekend’s LPGA Tour qualifying event in Florida.

She now has full playing status for 2009, finishing tied for 12th with an 8-under-par 352 after 90 holes in the qualifying tournament. Coincidentally, that is the same mark fellow Okinawan Ai Miyazato carded in her opening round of the 2005 LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, which she went on to win by a record 12 strokes. Miyazato was one of five amateurs competing in the 139-player field.

“I’ve only taken the first step in my dream” Mika said this week, promising to “step up my efforts to meet everyone’s expectations. She skipped Japanese Q-School in May to attend golf academy in Florida. Mika says she’s excited at joining fellow Okinawa golfer Ai Miyazato and Japanese Momoko Ueda, who’ve been playing on the LPGA U.S. Tour this year.
