One year later, baby remains unidentified

Date Posted: 2008-12-11

Okinawa City Police have run out of clues in trying to identify the body of a newborn baby boy found more than a year ago, and they’re now appealing for the parents to step forward and claim the body.

The newborn’s body was found wrapped in a plastic bag, floating near the Awase Fishing Port on December 8th 2007. The body was discovered by a group of junior high school youngsters playing on the fishing port beach. An autopsy showed the baby was less than a week old at time of death.

Officials say they’ve been unable to find records of any babies who died before or after birth during the time period. “There were a lot of people we met who were suggested as parents,” an official says, “but the claims disagreed with DNA evidence.”

Okinawa City Office officials have named the baby Nozomu, meaning ‘hope’ but police investigators haven’t come up with evidence that would provide such hope. The body remains at Okinawa Funeral Hall, waiting for a parent to claim the body.
