Awamori becomes favorite souvenir from Okinawa

Date Posted: 2003-09-19

Okinawa’s local alcoholic beverage, awamori, is proving to be a most popular souvenir for visitors. According to a survey conducted by magazine “Jaran,” more than 50% of Japanese tourists visiting Okinawa buy awamori. The survey was published in the Sep. 15 issue of the magazine. It covered 500 visitors to the prefecture, 396 female and 104 male.

Almost everyone surveyed, or 95%, knew what awamori was. 44 percent knew what was “koshu” or old awamori. They also knew that awamori becomes better as it is aging and to earn the distinction to be called “koshu” the drink has to mature at least three years. Some 55%of those surveyed also named awamori as their favorite buy as a souvenir from Okinawa. Most cited its good taste as the main reason why they favored the drink. Those who said that they would not buy a bottle of awamori as a souvenir said the prime reason was that they did not want to carry a heavy bottle within their luggage.

Most also opted to buy a bottle priced at less than ¥3,000. For a large selection of awamori, to learn ways to enjoy it and have a free taste of several brands, visit Okinawa Market on Chuo Park Avenue in Okinawa City.
