Opposition criticizes LDP, calls for stop to graduate university

Date Posted: 2008-12-05

The Liberal Democracy Party is under fire from the central government in Tokyo, and opposition politicians are joining the fray to criticize the waste of precious resources.

At the top of Tokyo’s list, as defined by a project team assembled to stop the waste of public resources, is Okinawa’s Science and Technology Graduate University being built in Onna Village. The team calls the project a waste, but Okinawa officials are challenging the thinking, asking the government to “think carefully and make sure you know what’s going on.”

Okinawa Prefecture officials acknowledge the graduate university will cost a lot, but says the project should not be scrubbed. Instead, officials who note Okinawa has a special minister appointed by Tokyo because of the southern prefecture’s unique problems, should look elsewhere to curb waste.

They are pointing out it’s the central government that’s being wasteful, noting purchase of massage chairs and karaoke machines using road tax money. Okinawa’s also criticizing the central government’s tacit approval of staff members using public funds to take taxis home late at night after they’ve gone to night clubs to drink.

Okinawa officials say Okinawa has never been wasting money, and that the central government should take responsibility, noting new 2008 policies were supposed to eliminate civil servants’ use of public money for recreational purposes.
