Lagging customer base leads to hotel closure

Date Posted: 2008-12-05

The Okinawa Kariyushi Urban Resort Naha is now closed, a victim of an ailing economy and fewer hotel guests.

The popular hotel located on the edge of Tomari Port in downtown Naha City closed its doors November 30th. The Hotel with its 240 rooms has been a downtown landmark since construction in April 1995. The hotel was located inside the multi-purpose Tomarin Building owned by Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture and a third sector company.

The Okinawa Kariyushi Urban Resort Naha part of the building included several restaurants, a banquet hall, a wedding hall and retail shops. Itís owner, Chokei Taira, also owns a hotel in Onna Village. Taira tried repeatedly over the past several years to strike a revised rental agreement with the third sector company, Tomari Wharf Development Company, but the private company wanted instead to sell the building.

The company had several suitors, including Mitsui Real Estate Company from mainland Japan, but the parties could never reach any agreement. Tomari Wharf Development Company wanted Taira to purchase the building, but the hotel operator wasnít interested. What Taira wanted was a rent reduction that would have permitted the hotel to remain open, telling the Tomari Wharf Development Company there werenít enough customers to justify the higher rent.

Tomari Wharf Development Company has not indicated what its plans for the building will now be.
