Revised traffic laws boost seat belt use

Date Posted: 2008-11-27

Back seat passengers riding in automobiles are making seat belts ‘click’ significantly more now, thanks to enforcement of revisions to the national road traffic law nearly five months ago.

A new survey shows a 59% increase in back seat passenger seat belt use on expressways, up to 62.5%, while 30.8% of passengers on local roads are wearing seat belts, a jump of 22 points. A one penalty point assessment is made to drivers of cars with back seat passengers not wearing seat belts on expressways starting next April. Currently police officers are giving “guidance” but no penalty points to violators.

The survey was conducted by the Japan Automobile Federation and the National Police Agency.
