Okinawa wins bid for major athletic meet

Date Posted: 2008-11-27

More than a half-million visitors will be pouring into Okinawa in 2010 to participate in the Chura-shima Okinawa Nationwide High School Athletic Meet.

The prefecture won rights to host the event July 28th ~ August 20th 2010, a first time Okinawa. Okinawa Prefecture’s Board of Education has already begun developing plans to make it a successful sports meet, involving all municipalities and with a half-dozen local communities actually hosting events.

Okinawa City will host track and field, basketball, tennis, swimming and gymnastics, while Kadena Town and Yomitan Village will handle the softball tournament. Kitanakagusuku Village will organize the bicycle race, Kin Town hosts fencing, and Uruma City has responsibility for sumo wrestling and soccer.

Recognizing it takes plenty of organization to host 540,000 visitors in a short period, government agencies are gearing up to attract volunteers to assist. Special appeals are going out to families of high school students, asking their participation.
