Miyakojima company owner arrested for assault, extortion

Date Posted: 2008-11-21

The owner of a Miyakojima construction company is behind bars, charged with assaulting a man sent to collect money on a crane rented but not paid for.

Maezato Mitsuhiro had rented the heavy crane from a Tokyo company, but not made payments over a one-year period in 2007-2008. The company sent two men to get the money and the crane, but Mitsuhiro told them No, please. I can’t return the machine yet.”

Told he had to pay more money or forfeit the machine, Mitsuhiro grabbed a baseball bat and struck one of the men in the thigh, sending him to the hospital for three weeks. He then told the second man “Pay me ¥10 million right now or I will kill you.” The Tokyo company immediately transferred the money to Mitsuhiro’s bank account, but then had its employees go to police and report the incident.

The 34-year-old Mitsuhiro was arrested by Miyakojima City police.
