Tongue-tangled manager blows his story to cops

Date Posted: 2008-11-21

The emergency call to Okinawa City Police was that a robber had entered the Southwest Misato Drug Store and held the manager at knife point while he robbed the store of ¥1,000,000 ($10,415).

“Please help me. A robber came to my shop and threatened me with a knife and took ¥1,000,000 from my cash register,” the manager pleaded. It didn’t take long for police to shift from concerned to confused to unbelieving. The manager’s answers to their questions at the drug store in the Mihara area simply weren’t making sense. “He was incoherent,” a policeman said. “He kept changing his story” telling officers different stories about what he, the manager was doing, when the man came in, his description and other details. One minute he described the robber as looking 20 years old and 160cm tall, then moments later said “maybe he was not that young, or I didn’t see him well. I don’t know how he escaped. I don’t know if he had a car or not.”

Police changed their line of questioning and the store manager finally broke down, telling officers “Sorry it was a joke. I just wanted money. Police confirmed that moments later when they found the missing money in the man’s car, where he’d hidden it.

Police arrested the man.
