Date Posted: 2008-11-14

Uruma City has taken the challenge of developing and opening an International School within three years, offering preschool, elementary and middle school classes in English.

Officials say the International School is to open in advance of the Okinawa Science Technical Graduate University in Onna Village. The post-graduate university is to open in 2012. All courses will be taught in English at the school, which will also maintain normal compulsory education classes.

Uruma City has donated the land, and will also let the new school use some city facilities. “It will make our city active, and bring an international friendship exchange to our children,” a Uruma City official says. The school will be the first International School in Okinawa. Okinawa Prefecture will handle the contracts and paperwork, and provide funding by drawing subsidies from the central government.

Obunsha Company will handle finances, and take responsibility for operating the school. “Children are going to speak English,” Uruma City officials say, “as will staff. It will affect other schools and stimulate further development for children. Authorized funding from Okinawa Prefecture is to come this month.
