Okinawa leads nation in hamburger shops

Date Posted: 2008-11-14

Okinawa has more restaurants per 100,000 residents than Tokyo, and local officials are beaming with pride that Okinawans love to eat out.

Hamburgers are luring customers to visit the highly competitive fast food stores, where Okinawa has eight per 100,000 residents. Tokyo, by comparison, has 7.1 and Osaka only 4.1. A total of 107 hamburger shops are currently operating on Okinawa.

Noodle shops are more favored in other prefectures, as are Okonomiyaki and curry restaurants. While hamburgers outstrip noodles in popularity, the burgers aren’t #1 in Okinawa; soba restaurants are Okinawa’s most popular dining out fare.
