Radio-controlled modelers find local paradise

Date Posted: 2008-11-07

Rajikon Tengoku is just what radio-controlled model enthusiasts have been waiting for.

The model cars specialists are operating the only store of its kind on Okinawa, but Rajikon has gone one step further. Within the confines of the store located in Naval Kadena, Rajikon operates a race circuit course for modelers to pit their skills. One of 40 outlets in Japan but the only one in Okinawa, Rajikon boasts a selection of more than 10,000 radio-controlled models and products.

Rajikon carries radio-controlled products by leading Japanese brands, including Tamiya and Yokomo, the inventor of drift tires, which has led to a boom in the challenges of drifting. Thos tires are a perfect fit for Rajikon’s in-house circuit, which is designed with three separate courses, including a drift course. There’s also a Mini-Z course and a rock crawling course to challenge racers. Race enthusiasts can use the course for a full day for ¥1,500, or play for five hours for only ¥800.

Circuit course registration is ¥500, which includes a ¥500 discount coupon which can be used both for purchasing goods or for circuit fees. Members are offered discount deals for collected points, as well as a 5% discount on merchandise purchases. The discounts, Rajikon officials say, extend to sale merchandise.
Rajikon is now planning to organize radio-controlled car races in the near future. The store is open noon to 11 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Payments must be made in yen, but credit cards are accepted. An ad in this week’s Japan Update has additional special discount information.

Rajikon is in Naval Kadena, a large shopping mall on Highway 58. The complex includes furniture store Lapin, a Kanehide DIY garden store, and a large Daiso ¥100 store. To enter Naval Kadena, travel north toward Nago on Highway 58, passing the complex on the left, then making a left at the corner with a Lawson’s and a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant.
