Golden Kings strike six-game win streak

Date Posted: 2008-11-06

The latest to fall in a pitched battle with the Ryukyu Golden Kings was the Heat Devils, a team from Oita Prefecture.

Okinawa’s team in the Professional Basketball Japan League thumped the Heat Devils 86-64 in a game played in Naha City’s gymnasium, stretching its win streak to six games. The Ryukyu Golden Kings now lead the league’s West Coast District.

Led by four foreigners—Anthony MacHenry, Jeff Newton, Brian Sympson and Clis Air—the Golden Kings have turned fortunes around from a dismal showing last season. The Golden Kings take on Takamatsu Awere in an away-from-home game.

“It was kind of a thoughtful game,” lamented a player on the losing Oita team, “because the Ryukyu Golden Kings’ head coach was our team coach until last year.” He said “another player was my high school senior, and another my junior, and we played together before and felt the same inspiration, but now we lost to them.”

The Heat Devils head coach said he “felt great that the team has won on its home court in Okinawa. The team has become so strong.” Dai Oketani says “the team has learned how to make safety plays on defense, and Jeff Newton and others threatened us.”
