More health-care deductions slapped on elderly citizens

Date Posted: 2008-10-31

Hundreds of citizens 75 years of age and older are furious over the latest round of health insurance premiums being taken from their pensions.

Another three million elderly citizens felt the blow this month as the government automatically began taking the premiums from pensions, infuriating the older generation because of what they charge is discrimination against them simply because they’re older and must seek medical attention more frequently. The new wave of automatic deductions raises to 6.69 million the number of elderly who are feeling the pinch.

The automatic deductions began in April as part of a new medical program for seniors, the fourth in a series of scheduled moves by the central government. The program intent was to balance the burden of increasingly expensive medical expenses across the public, but it’s been met with disdain.

The ruling party has seemingly modified its position on the program, realizing the political impact, but has yet to recommend changes to the Diet. The Health, Labor and Welfare Minister is trying to defend the new system, charging the old system had many faults. “I’ve explained the good things about the program as a way of solving these problems,” says Yoichi Masuzoe during testimony at a budget committee meeting in the House of Councilors., but added “there are issues in reality”. He told the committee seniors are irritated about the automatic deductions as the only method for paying medical expenses, and that seniors feel it isolates them.

He’s created a special unit to review the program, telling lawmakers the group will report directly to him. He noted the Liberal Democratic Party-New Komeito political parties are also investigating the issue. The Prime Minister, Taro Aso, has called for a review of the program, but hasn’t said if he supports abolishing it.
