Mayoral candidates ready as election day approaches

Date Posted: 2008-10-31

Naha City voters will go to the polls November 16th to elect a new mayor.

The question of a concurrent general election to pick new members for the House of Representatives is in limbo, with no formal decision yet from the Prime Minister on a call for new elections.

Media reports say Taro Aso is leaning against spot elections, despite predictions he would do so this Fall. The latest from the Prime Ministerís office is that Aso wants to wait, choosing instead to concentrate now on dealing with economic issues.

In Naha City, incumbent mayor Takeshi Onaga is gearing up to take on two challengers. The 58-year-old two-term mayor is facing 65-year-old Chosei Taira, the opposition partyís candidate, and 70-year-old Hisako Hokama, representing the Communist Party.
