Burglar admits stealing ¥830 million in dozens of heists

Date Posted: 2008-10-24

The 38-year-old thief was both contrite and proud has he confessed to Okinawa Prefecture Police his accomplishments in breaking into at least 142 homes and businesses, making off with ¥830 million in cash, jewelry and other goods.

Chokei Yosa was arrested after a Ginowan City Police Station investigative group teamed with Okinawa Prefecture Police. A surprise fact to police was Yosa’s admission he committed 142 offenses, 38 more than had even been reported to police. Yosa says he netted ¥500 million in cash.

Police investigators say Yosa’s trail of burglaries and robberies took place in 2007 and into April 2008, hitting Naha, Okinawa, Ginowan, Itoman, Tomishiro and Nanjo Cities, as well as Kitanakagusuku Village. The thief used a bicycle to travel everywhere.

“I didn’t have money to live,” Yosa told police. “I have a big cash loan which I need to return, and I have no cash now.” He admitted he’s spent everything he stole, telling investigators he usually broke into homes after residents had gone to sleep.
