Fired workers meet after new hotel goes belly up

Date Posted: 2008-10-24

Construction has stopped on the partially-completed Sesoko Resort Hotel after its owner filed bankruptcy and sacked 138 workers.

Workers released by the company are now meeting with the Okinawa Labor Standards Bureau to get assistance in finding new jobs. Sesoko Resort Hotel was only halfway completed when work was halted. The Labor Standards Bureau is working with 35 companies to find new jobs for the newly unemployed workers, and says it has already received commitments for 214 positions.

More than 100 former employees say they’ll remain on Okinawa and try to find new jobs, while one from mainland Japan said he was returning home. One worker has already accepted one of the newly-created jobs with other companies.
