Cafe caters to art and appetites

Date Posted: 2008-10-24

The concept is unique, and quickly catching on. Cotonoha Artspace & Cafe is the first in Okinawa to combine the work of emerging artists with fine cuisine, and customers like it. The cafe is furnished with teak tables and leather couches; trees are spaciously placed, which add warmth to the cafe's minimalist interior, and large windows look directly out onto the highway displaying a variety of art for passersby to see.

Textiles by cultural anthropologist & textile producer Robert Clyne will be on display at the cafe from November 2nd to the 8th. His exhibition, entitled African Kanji, chronicles his vision of combining African aesthetics and Japanese Kimono craftsmanship. His works combine classic African textile motifs hand-painted or hand-stenciled on Japanese kimono silk using traditional black Kyo Honguro dye.
Sumi-e paintings from Nagasaki-born artist Arisa Okazaki will be on display from November 2nd to the 29th. Arisa relies on spontaneous expression to paint the essence of her subjects. Her goal is to honor the preciousness of all life and the inherent struggle in the human condition. She hopes viewers of her work will experience this hidden message.

Cotonoha Artspace & Cafe also features musical performances, showings of independent films, and poem readings. To visit Cotonoha Artspace & Cafe, travel south on Route 330 toward Futenma and turn left at the three-way intersection after the Legion Club. Continue past the Uehara Post Office on the right, and Cotonoha is on the right across from Hotto Motto. Further information is available in English at 090-9787-9844, or in Japanese at (098) 893-7299.
