Industrial Fair exhibits at Onoyama Park in Naha

It’s far and away the largest exhibition of industrial goods in Okinawa, and more importantly, its focus and appeal is on products made in the prefecture.

The 32nd annual Okinawa Industrial Fair runs Friday through Sunday in downtown Naha City, at the city’s sprawling Onoyama Park complex. As the name implies, the fair brings together virtually all of Okinawa’s cities, towns and villages with crafts and products manufactured or handmade by local residents. If it’s designed or made anywhere in this southernmost prefecture, visitors will have a chance to see, touch and in some cases, taste the merchandise.

The Industrial Fair is scattered around Onoyama Park, with exhibits staged at the martial arts Okinawa Prefecture Budoukan, around the fountain, along the river, near the various athletic venues and along the winding paths. More than 300,000 visitors are expected at this year’s three-day event being staged to further promote locally produced goods across more of Asia.

Every conceivable product—and some you’ve probably never even thought of—will be on display; foods, plants, juices and more will be available. Exhibits and booths dedicated to local potteries, glassware and Ryukyu glass, textiles and ceramics, bingata and minsa fabrics, shiisaa and Kariyushi wear fashions will be on display and, in some cases, for sale.

It’s a fair, an exhibition and a community party. More than a dozen major venues are set up again this year, and that includes participation by Okinawa’s homegrown brewery, Orion, and many of the 54 awamori distillers will offer tasting and sale of the tasty, unique Okinawa liquor. Food and drinks booths will be along the riverside walk, along with dozens of hand crafted products, health goods, yakitori and yakisoba. And for simple relaxation, check out the rest area set up at the stadium while you take a break from the sightseeing, shopping and taste testing.

The Cost

The Industrial Fair is open to everyone on Okinawa. Admission is free to all venues. Food and beverage costs, as well as costs of souvenirs, foods and other goods purchased from vendors and artists on display are whatever you elect to spend.
Getting There

Onoyama Park is located on the south side of downtown Naha, across from Naha Port and Naha Military Port. Travel south on Highway 58 from the military bases. As you approach the river, Onoyama Park is on the left. Free parking is available at Naha Military Port; look for traffic guides. Shuttle busses will transport visitors to the Fair every 15~20 minutes between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.
