Routine police patrol nets teen drug arrest

Date Posted: 2008-10-16

A high school boy is in custody after he was busted for possession of pot after Okinawa City Police stopped to quiz a group of young people hanging out at Chatan Town’s Mihama area, checked a wallet and discovered the drug.

After initially telling officers the wallet containing 45 grams of dry marijuana wasn’t his, but was found on the street, the 17-year-old admitted “I got this pot from my friend, Naoya Touma.” Touma was tracked down and arrested, protesting he wasn’t involved.

Police weren’t buying the 23-year-old’s story, and spent the past week investigating further, finding a half-dozen other high school teens who said they’d seen Naoya with pot. He finally confessed, telling police “I got the pot from one of my foreign friends.” A search of Naoya’s car found a pipe used to smoke pot, plus additional drugs.

The chairman of the Okinawa Prefecture Board of Education says he’s shocked to learn some of his students were using cannabis. Morikazu Nakamura says “we’re shocked to learn a high school boy is involved in this. I can’t believe it, and feel responsibility for the boy. It must not happen again, never again.”

The educator promises to “do our best to protect children from medicinal abuse, not only in school, but at home, in the community, and related institutions.”
