Prosecutor wants prison time for confessed rapist

Date Posted: 2008-10-09

The Naha District Prosecutor wants a military dependent to go to jail for his raping and assaulting an Okinawa City sex club worker last Fall.
The 22-year-old Air Force dependent, Kevin Parks, has confessed to hitting and raping the woman during a visit to the sex parlor, but says he was hearing the devil’s voice while with her, making him become violent. Parks asked the presiding judge, Hiroyuki Yoshii, for immediate sentencing, telling the judge he was innocent. The judge refused, and set sentencing for November 20th.
Parks, son of an Air Force captain, listened as his attorney appeal for a suspended sentence on grounds his client was not capable of controlling his actions at the time of the assault and rape. Defense attorney Satoshi Kawamitsu pointed to a diagnosis by U.S. Navy psychiatrists that his client suffers a bipolar mood disorder, and that he was in a state of diminished mental capacity.
Prosecutor Tomoyuki Shirai said no, because a Japanese psychiatrist had determined Parks was okay, and using the ‘hearing voices’ claim as a way of shirking responsibility. The prosecutor told Judge Yoshii Parks should receive five years behind bars. Shirai noted Parks’ actions were deliberate, entering the sex establishment without money, and carrying the beer bottle he subsequently used to hit the 22-year-old sex worker in the face with.
