Yaesu’s current, former mayor make financial feud settlement

Date Posted: 2008-09-26

The former mayor of Yaese Town spent more than ¥13 million of village money to pay staff for work performed for a civilian construction company, a move that led to the current mayor taking the case to court.

Eikou Kinjo was mayor of then Kochinda Town, now merged and named Yaese Town, when he directed his staff to use town employees to perform work for a construction group. When the current mayor took office, he challenged Kinjo’s move and demanded Kinjo pay the money back to Yaese Town.

Kinjo refused, leading to charges filed in court. This week, though, the former and current mayors reached an out-of-court settlement to spare the town, because “if the courthouse takes a long time, the town’s people will never believe in us anymore.” Under terms of the settlement, Kinjo must acknowledge his wrongdoing by making a confession, but will not have to repay Yaese Town the ¥13 million.

The former mayor says that “I didn’t mean to make personal money or profit by paying staff salaries with town funds.”
