Crane snaps, killing local One construction worker

Date Posted: 2008-09-26

A six-story tall crane at an Okinawa City construction site broke Saturday, sending a gondola unit down onto a worker guiding the unit to a truck, killing the man.

Eight workers were in the process of moving heavy iron beams from the second floor of the construction site in the Chibana area, down to a waiting truck when the crane snapped and toppled onto the 58-year-old man guiding the crane. The gondola struck his head. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors said there was nothing they could do.

Sadanobu China was pronounced dead on arrival.

The other workers escaped injury in the incident. The construction company said the six-level crane had the metal beams hanging on iron wires. Police are now conducting an investigation.
