Motobu wins decades-old fight against JMSDF base

Date Posted: 2008-09-26

The Ministry of Self Defense Forces has tossed in the towel, giving up on plans to build a submarine operations message center in Motobu.

Construction of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Operations Center in Motobu’s Toyohara area has been fought by local residents for more than 21 years. The Ministry has announced it will no longer pursue plans for a facility in Motobu.

Celebration was quick by the committee opposing the facility. Committee Chairman Shinyuu Kawakami says “the fight had been long, but we won. Still,” he said, “there remain signs of what the war caused, like the former Kaminmotobu Airport, which still has coral left over since the last war.” Kamakami and former committee chairman Seihou Kina are calling on the Japanese and American governments to clean up the area.

“We still have to fight for ridding the site of the remnants of war,” Kina says, and now have to promote and develop the land.” A happy resident added “the time has been too hard on us, and the state should bear some responsibility for its actions over th past 21 years.”
