Military, civilian vehicle collision injures drivers

A 23-year-old Marine Corps military policeman is hospitalized with broken legs after being struck head-on in a collision with a civilian vehicle.

Authorities say A 43-year-old Chatan resident, Akira Shimoji, was driving north in the southbound lane of the Okinawa Expressway when he crashed into the military police car. Okinawa Prefectural Police say Shimoji is hospitalized in serious condition following the 5:50 a.m. accident last Thursday.

The deputy chief of the Okinawa Police Expressway Squadron says blood alcohol tests have been taken from Shimoji, who is in Chubu Hospital in Uruma. Masao Mishima says there were no passengers in either vehicle. The Marine Corps has not released the name of the military police officer, who is at the U.S. Naval hospital on Camp Lester.
