Specialist removes 60,000 bees from Itoman home

Date Posted: 2008-08-30

Homeowner Teruya Kunio found the bees nest beneath his Itoman City home more than two years ago, but didn’t pay much attention until this week, when the buzzing bees began disturbing his family.

His son was attacked, and then bees stung both is son and mother while they were sleeping, so Teruya called in the expert. Apiarist Tsutomu Arakaki has been dealing with bees for some 40 years, and quickly answered Arakaki’s plea for help.

“Oh!” he exclaimed after first studying the beehive. “I have never seen such a huge size beehive.” Undaunted though, the 52-year-old bee specialist removed the 80 centimeter hive and an 60,000 bees from the home. A by-product to the hive removal was removal of 20 kilograms of fresh honey created by the bees.

Arakaki says he gets calls several times a day from local city offices asking for his help in relocating bees away from residences and offices. He warns people not to try dealing with bees by themselves, because “it hurts when you get attacked by bees. It’s better to move away quickly.”
