Operator questions Miyako hotel sale

Date Posted: 2008-08-30

Harimizu Resort Development Company is asking a court to award ¥100 million in damages for what it calls a raw deal in sale of the Miyakojima hotel it operates.

The resort development company operates the hotel on behalf of Miyakojima Marine Terminal and a third sector business consortium involving both Miyakojima City and private companies. Marine Terminal has sold the hotel to a mainland Japanese company, Route in Japan, and Harimuzu Resort Development Company president Yonezo Shimoji says the contract was done without consultation with his company.

Shimoji charges Miyako City Mayor Akira Ishimine, who also serves as president of Marine Terminal, with ignoring problems with the hotel buyer, route in Japan, and with failing to discuss the sale with Harimuzu Resort Development, which owns 14.9%, 2,300 shares of the hotel stock. He says there are problems with Route in Japan’s setting conditions for employees, and maintaining the hotel banquet hall, “so we would still like to discuss things with them.”

Marine Terminal Company says “the sale to Route in Japan was decided by a board of directors meeting, and not by an individual. “It was everybody’s decision, and we are now in the process of selling the hotel.” Harimizu Resort Development Company has yet to transfer operational control of the hotel to Route in Japan, despite its contract expiration in August 2007.
