Police investigate why boy is injured on store escalator

Date Posted: 2008-08-30

A seven-year-old boy was hospitalized after his head became trapped between an escalator in the San-A Nishihara City shopping center and an adjacent wall, and police are wanting to know how the accident could happen.

The incident occurred when the Yaese Town youngster and his mother were riding the escalator to the third floor. The boy was leaning out of the escalator when his head was trapped, causing head bruises and two broken teeth. The boy has been treated by doctors and released from the hospital.

Urasoe City Police, who are investigating the accident, say the escalator has plastic side boards between the escalator and walls and ceiling on one side, but not the other. The right side, police say, had no guard board. While not explaining why, police say building regulations prohibit erecting safety guard boards on the second side of the escalator.
