Okinawa battle era photos donated by sailor’s family

Date Posted: 2008-08-30

Dozens of photographs depicting life on Okinawa in the days immediately following the Battle of Okinawa have been given to the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum.

U.S. Navy sailor Harold Fawcett took the photographs during the final stages of the Battle of Okinawa, and during the year after the battle ended on June 23rd of 1945. The sailor worked with engineers building an airfield runway, and took up photography as a hobby.

A total of 87 photographs showing American military personnel at work on a former Imperial Japanese Army airfield, a railway, and Japanese in a prison camp were presented to the museum by Fawcett’s grandson. Scott Fawcett says he felt Okinawa should have the photographs, which he hopes will help people appreciate what Okinawans faced in the aftermath of World War II.
