Dead arsonist being investigated by cops

Date Posted: 2008-08-30

An arsonist who died eight days ago while setting a fire in a Chatan Town building is now the subject of a police investigation.

A female witness who saw the man before he set the fire has told police he warned her “Be careful, you’d better escape from here.” She has told police she didn’t understand then why the man, who worked for her husband, made the comment. She now believes he set the fire after having some problems with her husband.

Police have been assembling a case file on the man, whom they’ve yet to publicly identify, and say they’re sending the information to the Naha District Prosecutor’s Office. Police have not released information about the man or the fire.

The fire broke out in a building housing a Montessori school in the Hamagawa area of Chatan Town last Wednesday. Teachers and staff safely evacuated five youngsters in the school at the time of the fire. There were no injuries.
