Former Wave 89 DJ looks for reporter roleDate Posted: 2008-08-22 ![]() The 24-year-old ex-airman, who remains on Okinawa working for Marine Corps Community Services with its cable television operations, has a new goal; he wants to win the title of ‘Rookie Reporter’ for Major League Baseball. Fineman is one of 48 contenders—four each from 12 major league teams entered in the competition—looking to be the top new face in baseball broadcasting. Having won the title of Best DJ in last year’s Stars & Stripes ‘Best in the Pacific’ polling, Fineman figures he’s got a pretty good chance of winning the Gillette 2008 Major League Baseball Rookie Reporter Showdown. The West Virginia native says he’d been “surfing the Pittsburgh Pirates web site, trying to get an update on scores, and saw the blurb about being the next rookie reporter.” Convinced he could handle it, Fineman fired off a YouTube video segment, and was chosen to compete. Each of the teams had about 40 entrants, and Fineman made the cut, travelling to Pittsburgh to answer tons of trivia questions, audition with two memorized broadcast scripts, and make commercials for Gillette, the competition sponsor. It’s now up to the voters, and Fineman says “you can be one of them.” The video pieces are all posted on major league baseball’s web site, http://www.mlb.com/mlb/fan_forum/gillette/reporter/. Website viewers can cast their votes, and Fineman says he’s excited about ultimately winning and reporting on baseball games, including the World Series. |
