Another group to study need for Okinawa casino gamblingDate Posted: 2008-08-22 This new committee headed by Tetsu Kohama, a professor at Yokohama University, has held its first conference and decided a public symposium is necessary to “explain how good it will be for the economy, and how economical it would be.” The group says “We need to discuss why casinos are necessary, and provide answers to citizens.” The group was initially formed a year ago, and has been sorting out what issues are of most concern to Okinawa. The committee expressed concerns about the negative image gambling has, and worries gambling could be a stumbling block to education because “children don’t want to study.” Fears that gangsters would become involved in casino operations is another area the committee wants to talk to the public about. “We have to crack down on current gangsters first,” the committee says, so it looks like casino businesses are still a long way away from coming to Okinawa.” |
