Kunigami Village residents file charges against mayor

Date Posted: 2008-08-22

Forgeries and shaky paperwork that led Kunigami Village to obtain 80 million in government subsidies as part of the northern Okinawa promotions program continue to rattle the secluded village, as residents have decided to bring charges against the former mayor and six village directors.

The former Kunigami Village mayor and six community directors, confronted with government demands for repayment of the subsidies on work not performed or completed, took 80 million in village funds and made restitution to the central government. Villagers have filed a complaint charging that the seven men had no right to take Kunigami Village money without permission.

The village residents are asking the court to make Hajime Miyagi and the six directors return the money to Kunigami Village coffers. Miyagi says I havent seen the complaint, but Im going to fight with them, for sure. Miyagi says he paid the bill with village money because I did it for the village, not for myself. The complaint accuses the seven of forging and falsifying documents to cover the transactions.
