Osaka Toin claims high school baseball crown

Date Posted: 2008-08-22

A grand slam home run in the first inning set the tempo for Osaka Toin High School as it roared to a 17-0 victory over Tokoha Gakuen Kikugawa to win the National High School Baseball Championship in historic Koshien Stadium in Nishnomiya Monday.

Tokoha, which thumped Urasoe Shogyo in the semifinals 9-4 to earn the right to face Osaka Toin, could not mount an offense, with Osaka pitcher Yuto Fukushima earning nine strikeouts in the championship game while giving up only five hits. Toin racked up a record 21 hits in the contest en route to its second championship, and first since 1991.

The game was an unbalanced rematch to the 2007 spring championship game, in which Tokoha beat Toin. Toinís victory was the 10th for the prefecture.
