Planes, bands, and fireworks tops at Futenma Flightline Fair

The airplanes are the centerpiece, but visitors to this weekend’s Futenma Flightline Fair have multiple choices of entertainment, food and plain ol’ festival fun.

Aircraft and helicopters from the different US military services will line the flightline Saturday and Sunday, giving spectators an opportunity for a peek at—and inside—some of America’s lead aviation assets on Okinawa. The Futenma Flightline Festival runs 3 ~ 10 p.m. Saturday, and 1 ~ 10 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free to everyone, island-wide.

A variety of bands will take to the stage, including Tokyo’s Latin band Rockamenco, J-Pop Band, Triple-P, Filipino variety band NTwine, and classic rock band Storm Watch. Other festival entertainment is to include the Japanese K9 Agarie dog school show, Byakuren Kaikan martial arts karate, and T-da Dance.

A dazzling display of fireworks Sunday evening about 9:30 p.m. brings the Futenma Flightline Festival to a close. Throughout the two days, a dozen contestants will eat their way to victory in the nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest with a grand prize of roundtrip tickets for two to any United Airlines USA gateway city via Nagoya, Osaka or Tokyo. Sports lovers will have a chance to show their skills in an arm wrestling or bench press competition.

Children can take a plunge into the Pool o’ Prizes for a chance to win Mattel toys, or one of two overnight stays for four at the YYY Resort on Ie Island. Contestants have 89 seconds to dig through a kiddie pool filled with water and 1,000 golf balls to find a winning ball. Attendees can also enter to win two roundtrip tickets to one of six U.S. destinations, a getaway to Club Med Ishigaki, or a seating-class upgrade on United Airlines.

Admission is free, and open to everyone island-wise, but no pets, backpacks or outside alcohol will be permitted.
