Okinawa Island Guide a must for newcomers

Date Posted: 2008-08-22

A comprehensive guidebook on everything Okinawan has just been updated, offering hundreds of facts and tidbits about life and living on the island.

The Okinawa Island Guide is a perfect introduction to Okinawa’s diversity, including information on the prefecture’s dozens of outer islands. Contents range from basic facts about history and culture, arts and crafts, festivals, sightseeing, beaches, shopping, dining and lodging, to information on Okinawa’s unique diet that has attributed to its peoples’ longevity.

Published annually by Okinawa Index, the Okinawa Island Guide is more than a simple facts book. While it serves newcomers well, it also ventures into depth on many topics to inspire longtime residents to explore all of the out-of-the-way spots of Okinawa.

The Okinawa Island Guide comes in a set of main and separate volumes, with the main guidebook published in large magazine format that features pages of large color photographs to accompany text. A separate accompanying volume contains not only general information, but a comprehensive catalogue of franchise stores, resort hotels, restaurants, sporting events and other important information including days and hours of operation.

Maps are an essential part of the Okinawa Island Guide, and are detailed to show relationships between roadways, monorail route, tourist sites and businesses. Large pullout maps of Naha, Okinawa City and Chatan are included with the book.

Also included in the separate volume is information on tourist spots, night clubs, bars and live music clubs in Chatan, Okinawa City and Kin. There’s also information on bus routes, monorail and the Okinawa Expressway.

The Okinawa Island Guide sells for $13.50 at AAFES PX/BX facilities at Camps Hansen, Schwab, Courtney and Foster, at the Kadena BX, and at Shoppettes on Kadena Air Base and camps Kinser, Shields, Lester, Futenma and Courtney. The Guide is also available at all USO Centers, and at Turtle Bookstore and other major bookstores off base.
