Date Posted: 2008-08-20

International travelers on Japan Air Lines and All Nippon Airways are going to feel the pinch of high oil prices even more beginning in October, when the two Japanese carriers say they’ll be raising prices as much as 10%.
The two airlines, members of the International Air Transport Association, support the industry group’s decision to endorse air fare hikes, which they say will be applied on some international flights. ANA also announced intentions of increasing its fuel surcharges on some overseas routes during the October ~ December quarter, citing the record high price of $163.54 per barrel recorded in Singapore during the May ~ July period.
Business travelers will feel the pinch most heavily, as both airlines say prices must go up. An ANA ticket to Los Angles will rise from ¥619,000 to ¥680,900. JAL reports its weekday business fare to New York will jump from ¥838,500 to ¥922,400, a 10% hike.
Japan Air Lines says it will raise prices 10% to North America, Central America, South America and Hawaii, and by 5% on routes to Africa, the Middle East and other Asian rgions. ANA set the same 10% hike plan for North America flights, while announcing plans to increase prices 5% on routes to Southeast Asia, South Korea, Guam, the Middle East, Africa, India and China.
