U.S. Consul General’s ouster demanded by Futenma group

Date Posted: 2008-08-15

To suggest that a Futenma group suing the government over noise pollution doesn’t like Kevin Maher is an understatement; they want him kicked out of Okinawa.

The American Consul General’s actions, says the Futenma group’s chairman, are disgraceful and unlawful, and his group is petitioning the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Secretary of State, Condolezza Rice, to remove him. Zenji Shimada led the move for a resolution against Maher at the group’s annual meeting in Ginowan City, charging Maher “should know about the results of the last war, and how military bases were formed.”

Shimada says the U.S. military plundered land belonging to Okinawans and built Futenma Marine Corps Air Station. “It’s illegal land use for Futenma, and the operation of Futenma is very abnormal,” he says, charging Maher knows America is violating the laws. He insists Maher knows the law, but refuses to listen, so “we protest what the American Consul General says. He cites a judgment against the government issued because of the noise levels at Futenma.
