Shinzo Abe, Japan’s former prime minister, has visited Okinawa as a private citizen, renewing acquaintances and dining at his local favorite, Sushi Bar Yoshihachi.

Yoshihachi’s owner, Yoshi Maekawa, invited Abe and his wife Akie, to visit. Abe, who was prime minister in 2006-2007, was in Okinawa for diving and relaxation, and had invitated 10 people to dinner. Abe and Maekawa have been friends for years. Maekawa says the former Japanese leader likes the new sweet potato roll on his menu, but adds Okinawan foods are also favorites.

Maekawa’s Yoshihachi Sushi Bar is popular with foreign leaders as well. Micronesia’s ex president, Leo Falcam, has visited both during and following his leadership tenure. The Yoshihachi’s owner said the world famous guitar group “The Ventures” who will be performing live tonight in Koza Music town, visited Yoshihachi for a dinner tucked in on Monday the 11th. Maekawa says he offered the American musical icons Soft Shell Crab, a Chatan Town special product now introduced to the Yoshihachi menu.

Yoshihachi, which is open every day but Tuesday, features not only sushi, but tempura, yakisoba, yakitori, beef teriyaki and chicken teriyaki, as well as Okinawan foods. Reservations are recommended at (098) 936-2359. The restaurant is open 4:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
